Chapter Six: Infrared Light Therapy Safety
Light therapy is generally safe and research has revealed few dangers or risks with regular use. That being said, it’s important to review safety precautions and contraindications, even if there are few.
First and foremost, consult a medical professional before beginning NIR/red light therapy.
Second, you will be using an electric lamp to operate a glass lightbulb that reaches temperatures in excess of 500 degrees. There are some basic safety precautions to keep in mind:-
Wear eye protection while using the bulb. Avoid looking directly at the bulb while it is lit.
-
Maintain a distance of at least 12 inches from the bulb when in operation
-
Keep anything that is flammable or can be damaged by heat at least 12 inches from the bulb. This includes but is not limited to clothing, carpets, paper, wood, and plastic.
-
Do not leave the bulb unattended while in use. Do not fall asleep while using the bulb.
-
Do not use near water or immerse the bulb in water.
-
Do not touch the bulb immediately after use. Let it cool down first.
-
Do not touch the bulb if you have oil or lotion on your hands.
-
Be cautious when handling glass bulbs as they can shatter if dropped or struck.
-
Make sure that the lamp you use to operate your NIR bulb is designed to operate bulbs that have the same or greater wattage. You can usually find this information on the side of the socket or on the cord.
-
Lastly, one of the only dangers posed by NIR/red light (or any heat source) is overheating. Do not exceed the time limit recommended by your medical professional. If you feel yourself overheating, move away from or turn off the bulb.
